I did not make it through all 20 novels, but I did enjoy 10 of them before I felt them getting a bit repetitive. I absolutely loved the first five or six. And I agree with the above, the books are a bit unforgiving with the terminology - everything is not going to be spelled out for you. You will not need a companion or nautical term dictionary to enjoy the first novel, but if you get hooked like I did, a resource to fall back on will deepen your appreciation.
