basically, thought there was a variant above 16cu -- pretty sure its more or less labelled 8050s while strix halo is 8060s I think 32cu and 40 cu respectively

I don't see the problem. It's just there to remind you that you have an Asus VivoBook in case someone asks and you have a brain fart.

Good specs, but at the $1k price point it seems difficult to not just get the more premium yet similar Zenbook S16 for $999 on frequent sales. 24GB should be plenty for most.

Have the Intel Ultra 9 chip version from last winter and like it. Would have preferred this one with the Ryzen processor, but needed a replacement laptop in a hurry. As SlickAnon posted, definitely compare the Zenbook S16. This is our first ASUS, and so far so good. Would buy again.

The HX 390/395 has really only shown up in the Asus Flow z13, HP ZBook Ultra G1a, and a few desktop mini-pcs. Laptop/tablets are over $2k, mini pcs are $1500+

Hi I'm looking for something that could run the latest Call of Duty on with no problems. Would this laptop be suitable?

This laptop doesn't have an Nvidia video board , so no it won't . An integrated video won't do the job .

That has a lower end AI 9 365 with 10 cores and downgraded 880M graphics. You have to choose what you want at this price, better performance with higher TDP and decent enough build quality or Premium Device with slightly lower end hardware and lower TDP for degraded performance but lower fan noise and better battery.
