Buyer beware, it does not use ball bearings. That's the cheapest improvement they could have added in and they did not opt for that. Mine has already started to make strange noises from the bushings with the setting on '5' which is the highest.

There are 5 speeds. 1-3 are OK but 4-5 will give error. It is also very flimsy fan. I am returning.

If you're getting an error you may not be using a powerful enough USB-A power adapter to run it. I believe the manual says to use a 10w power adapter (5v 2A) but it will run fine on a 5w power adapter at the 1 to 3 fan speeds.

I got one during previous sale, quite impressive for its size, and it has a more focused air movement like it operates more as a ducted fan than a normal desk fan that spreads out pretty quickly in a cone shape. It's great for the office desk when you're walking a quarter mile from the parking lot during a 98 degree summer day and need something to blast air on your face to cool off without sounding like a jet engine like the tiny battery powered handheld fans do.

I think this fan has a lot of versatility outside of general desk fan use, as you can plug it in to a battery bank via usb and have good air movement for tents or say car camping where you have the windows cracked open and need some air flow but don't want to bring a generator or run the car engine all night to run the ac. I know you can find a lot of battery powered fans this size out there but for someone that already has a 20,000+ mah battery bank and are going camping once a year this would be a versatile option you could then plug in to the car usb port for that passenger that needs more air blowing on them than the rest of the passengers. For what this is and the price point it's pretty awesome, and I wouldn't expect it to run max speed in the corner for 15 hours a day and survive years at a time. Most fans at this size or price point likely won't come with ball bearings but if you're using it on lower speed settings it will likely last a lot longer than you'd expect.

I got three of these before. All of them sounded TERRIBLE.

I strongly recommend literally anything else.

What type of bearing does it use?

If it's a sleeve bearing, you should be able to remove the blades from the spindle and grease it.

Chances are, that's the part they skimped out on.

Most computer fans have actually moved past ball bearings in the past 15 years, in favor of fluid dynamic bearings for both noise and efficiency. They actually consider ball bearings to be the lowest tier.
