This is a great little device while still being ergonomic and very pocketable.

Insane this thing doesn't have Bluetooth lol. I just want a cheap little android handheld, the Linux ones suck for pd charging and Bluetooth audio

i've been obsessively looking into this the last few days (as a new comer) and i ended up ordering the trimui brick fo around $40 (there's a $10 coupon out there) -- https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1...64605.html

the miyoo mini v4 seems well adored, i think i saw it down to like $25 a few months ago

i'm also interested in the retroid pocket mini v2, but at $200 i'm gonna hold out and see how much i use my $40 Brick

so to rank, and exclude widescreen devices,

retroid mini v2 > trimui brick > miyoo mini v4

2.8" screen. how can anyone be okay with staring at such a tiny screen?

At this price point, you can get a Trimui Smart Pro when those deals roll around and they have a 5 inch screen.
EDIT: Actually, same promo code brings the price of the Trimui Smart Pro down to the same price as this.

I picked one up during the last sale a few weeks ago. The build quality of the device is great! The screen size is small, but the picture is bright, crisp, and smooth. It works very well out of the box. The software is stable, though a little overwhelming to back out of if you hit a few wrong buttons.
Hardware Cons: No Bluetooth.
Software Cons: Needs a "play mode" where all the settings are locked/inaccessible to prevent button-mashers from getting lost.

people have been playing games on small screens for decades on various handhelds, phones, et. what do you expect for $40.

I just recently picked up a TrimUI brick (3.2" screen) after coming to terms that my RG28XX (2.8" screen) is just too small in my hands to enjoy most games. Although the MagicX Mini Zero 28 is bigger.. so maybe it's ok.

The word "pocketable" is pretty much a meme at this point in retro handhelds. But this thing is actually pocketable in a practical way. Nice smooth rounded edges and corners with circle pad joysticks that don't stick out, while still being substantial enough for adult hands to hold comfortably. For me, the small screen is an acceptable compromise for a truly pocketable device that's capable of some Dreamcast and PSP.
The real sticking point is the lack of touchscreen IMO. Having to rely on a virtual cursor makes first time setup on Android really awkward, but after that it's totally fine.

I'm quite happy with mine. And even if I'm near middle age games like Mario, Zelda, Sonic are perfectly playable. Those games didn't have a lot going on so scale down very nicely, especially with modern screens being 2-3x the resolution of OG handhelds (for example the original Gameboy's screen 2.6" and only 160x144 pixels). Same with console games scaled down in size, just works. A text heavy RPG wouldn't be great though, still doable if you had good eyes due to the crisp resolution. Not too many of those on retro systems though.
Tiny screen also equals pocketable, a 5" wide screen is great but I bet it rarely leaves the house.

FWIW, people watch movies meant for IMAX screens on their 4" iPhone. Playing a game meant for a 19" CRT on a 2.8" screen seems like less of a leap

That controller seems weird.

I was going to get one of these style devices until I realized I have an old Samsung s20 fe, that I got for like 50 bucks used... That + the 8bitdo mobile controller makes an amazing emulation machine
