Friends don't let friends play bass through any 8 inch speaker (or any kind of guitar, for that matter). I LOL'ed at the "delivers rich, punchy bass tones for practice or small gigs". Not with just 25 watts and an 8 inch speaker.

25W of solid state power also.........These things are only good for not being too upset when they go missing or break........

As a beginner, I got the black 25w as it was highly recommended from all the blogs. The white is very pretty. But after a year of playing, I'm jonesing for a 40 W. The 25 W is fine for bedroom practice. But at some point you wanna feel the base a little more.

25W is fine for practice. I keep one at the office for practice. I have a Rumble 500 with a 210 extension cab for when I need to do serious work.

To be fair, it's not the 25 watts that is the problem, but the 8 inch speaker and only 25 watts. Anything less than a 10" speaker for bass is gonna be underwhelming unless there are multiple drivers and much higher wattage (I used to have an Ampeg cabinet with eight 6.5" drivers that was super punchy on a 4 string and 500+ watts). You'll get plenty of mid-bass from this for practicing, but nothing "rich and punchy" as the description claims. Not much I would bother with out there until you get double the price of this little combo.

Reading the comments about how this is underwhelming, but my kid just started college and wants to bring his bass to his dorm room. Would the weakness be a strength that makes this the right kind of amp to not annoy his neighbors?

Yes that is the right application for this. He can always upgrade if needs change.
