Especially when Xen kicks in. that's like a totally new game at that point.

Until when Xen kicks in. that's like a totally worse game at that point."

FWIW, Xen in BM is a love it or hate it type thing....and I hated it. The rest of BM was pure joy though.
The best parts (besides zen): Sweet graphical upgrade, added and expanded areas, reworked opening, I never needed a walkthrough. Although some of that could be because I've played Half Life.
Worst (besides zen): Some sections drag (especially HECU combat), some non-reworked areas feels worse or more "gamey" when rendered with better graphics, ladders are worse. Got those right the first time.
As for Xen, it looks much better. In fact it went from the worst-looking section of the game to probably the best-looking section, and this is in a game that already looks better!
A lot of Xen plays better, too. Loved the first act of it. Then it started to drag, and drag, and drag....
The middle act of Xen is just doing adventure game puzzles for hours.
The final act of Xen was designed to feel "epic" and "climactic" so they just give you a whole bunch of health and infinite gluon gun ammo and throw you into giant hordes of enemies and like. That ain't why I'm playing half life. Let me hit somebody with my crowbar sometimes.

If memory serves, I didn't even play the last leg of it. I just watched the ending on Youtube....
Don't get me wrong, it looked amazing and I think my experience is a minority view however a view I have heard others express as well.
P.S. Everything bekeleven said too
If the section was FAR FAR FAR shorter, I wouldn't have cared (or could be ignored) but it did make up a good chunk of the overall game so I felt worth mentioning.
Regardless, Black Mesa is a must play.
