Would this be a good upgrade for someone moving from a beginner digital piano to a stage piano?

this is definitely good enough for most people. i would save and go into the 1k range at least though.
definitely go to stores and try any piano by hand first if you can.

But if it wasn't for the sale this would be in the 1k range, right?

What features in a 1k should aquitemouse look out for that's not in this? Maybe they can use this to figure out if they should hold out.

Like the other commenter said, you need to try it first if you can. Some of the spacing on some brands is narrow, so if you have larger hands, it can be hard to play. I have a kawai and it's great, but the yamaha I had before was miserable because the spacing between the black keys wasn't enough to get my finger to his the key between without hitting the black keys too. Hopefully you have a guitar center close by and can at least check the various models out. Not sure where you're at with performance, but many people performing will be playing through a VST, so 'sound' is irrelevant, and you can focus on key feel and touch.

Great price on this board. Don't sleep on this deal if you need a weighted 88 key controller with pitch and mod wheel, these don't even go this low used on eBay. It's got Casio's best most evolved action - the Tri-Sensor Scaled Hammer Action II. In recent years, they changed their action and it got much worse. None of their new boards have good action anymore - this was at the peak of when they had good action.

There are only Casio 2 boards with this action and the pitch and mod wheels - this and the PX-560 which I also highly recommend if you need built-in speakers. This one doesn't have speakers.

As far as the AiR Sound Source sound engine; it's not terrible and there are some gems here and there. The piano sounds have sympathetic string resonance and aren't the worst, but newer digital pianos will probably sound a little more hi-fi. Personally I'd rather rely on VSTi's for full sounding piano, but the out of the box sounds get the job done.

The dopest thing about this deal is that it's still active through this link, but if you SEARCH for the same thing on Adorama (or ANYwhere else, fyi), it is $1,099—and they claim even that's a discount off the original $1,699 price, which seems a bit dubous. I don't know why, but it works. We have one on the way Saturday. Thanks, OP!
