If you are buying two different brands of bags, it doesn't sound like they are lasting all that long to me. I own a 20-year-old Patagonia bag that I have used many, many times as a checked bag when flying and it still is in great shape, and we all know how gently airlines handle checked bags. While Patagonia has a great warranty, what you are really paying for is the fact you are unlikely to ever need it.

There are a number of reasons why Patagonia bags cost more and a number of reasons why people still buy them. Tbh you either get it or you don't. Nobody online is going to convince someone that's been buying cheap duffels that a black hole is worth it, just like nobody online is going to convince someone that buys black holes that they're "wasting" money.

It's not up for debate, Patagonia makes a higher quality bag than cheap competitors, stands behind that product with a rock solid warranty, and is also about as anti-waste and environmentally responsible as you can reasonably expect a massive corporation to be. Whether or not those things are worth the extra money to you personally, is entirely up to you. For a lot of people, using higher quality products made by respectable brands is worth the extra doe. For a lot of other people, getting a new $20 bag every couple of years is just fine. Whether or not you're feeding into the destruction of our planet with rampant consumerism and waste also isn't really up for debate. Unfortunately, there are many folks that aren't in a place where they can afford the more expensive option and are left with no choice but to buy the cheap bags every couple years, but that's a different discussion entirely.

Some of these sizes are 40% off at Patagonia online, but you pay shipping. They do this each year discontinue the old colorways for new ones.

They are all made of polyester like Adidas or puma duffle bags, but cost almost ten times more? What is so special about apart from that name

Great warranty

Why would I bother about a warranty for $15-20 polyester bags.
I have been using Adidas and puma bags in the gym for years and they get abused everyday and still last years.
Paying ten times more for warranty is ridiculous.

Or maybe he owns two different bags for different reasons? So maybe be nice instead of deploying the snark?

I want to draw as little attention to my luggage as possible when I travel...thieves are going to target the higher end, and while Patagonia may not be Rimowa or Tumi, it's not REI either.

I generally only use duffels to carry excess luggage back from my trip, so get the largest one that will be under the 50lb (or 70lb if you're flying up front!) limit...100l worked well last month.

Also, luggage gets gross over time. I just bought a new Samsonite 24", and forgot that it was going to be 100 degrees at DFW (flying back from Europe)...a bar of chocolate melted all over the inside, and while I cleaned it pretty well, there is still some residue.
