Get the long handle one. Not this one if you really have hard wood.

I'd be interested in this if I didn't just get a splitting wedge. Price is definitely right for a splitter.

These are phenomenal for splitting. Beats a splitting maul any day of the week. You can get lots of speed since its light.

Agreed all around these are great splitters. The 36" is even better.

Agreed. I have the X27, and it's the best axe I have ever used.

Protective sheath so my trees don't propagate while watching me split logs. Except those crepe myrtles, they are of questionable morals.

Crepe Myrtle's are the worst. They are more weed than tree. So hard to kill/remove and annoying to see shoot ups years after removal.

GET THE LONGER HANDLED model if you are really splitting wood or doing any real work. If you are using it as a camp axe/minimal work maul to split a few logs and know what you are doing, this is a quality tool. The 24 inch handle is extremely dangerous, very likely to take off toes or do major damage to your shin. Or if you have an appropriately sized boy under 5 foot, this might be the right size.

+1. I've been using X27 36" over the past few years and it's fantastic. Compared to my friend's X25 28", X27 is much better for splitting bigger or harder chunks. X17 won't probably be even close to either.

In addition, for those who are planning to split lots of wood, I'd recommend getting a 10-pound 36" sledge hammer and wood-splitting wedges.

I've had the x25 length for 20? years.... has been my go-to for 90% of my round splitting for firewood.
Didn't know there was a 36" one... tempting for those times I needed it.

head weight:
x25 is 4.03lb
x27 is 4.3lb

I do have a maul and wedges (maul from 50s, wedges from 1800's WA company) but seldom use them.
