Do those products have the short shelf when closed? It's quite convenient to have a few basic things you use all the time stay there without the table extended.

So $20 for two brackets, that likely don't have the short shelf portion. Lets say $5 for hardware to attach. That leaves $45 for a 3/4" board. I'm not sure you can find a board for that price and even if you build your own, clamp, glue sand, polish, all that for under $45 ? Even if, if you don't save at least $20 might as well buy this, that leaves $25 for a finished board.

I made my own out of scrap 2x4s and plywood using a Kreg system to put it together. The only things I had to buy were the bolts to attach the legs and a piano hinge.

I was thinking the same but the separate piece at the back wouldn't work well and it's going to be really shallow if you don't use the back piece as well

Mine is in the garage also, attached to the wall. It's good for small messy wood work projects. I just use the cordless leaf blower to clean up after.
