Thanks OP. Bought the book. Seems interesting.

Take heed... "Many of us insist the main impediment to a full, successful life is the outside world. In fact, the most common enemy lies within: our ego. Early in our careers, it impedes learning and the cultivation of talent. With success, it can blind us to our faults and sow future problems. In failure, it magnifies each blow and makes recovery more difficult. At every stage, ego holds us back."

Great book, my second favorite of the three. Obstacle Is The Way is the best, IMO.

I don't like making the ego, the boogeyman. I think it is essential to our survival in the world, which is why I am skeptical of this book.
I am reading Design Your Life, which takes a different approach to being content. I would recommend it.

Ego is the enemy? On the back cover of this book, Holiday says that we are going to meet personalities like George Marshall, Jackie Robinson etc. We also get to hear from Bill Belichick? Him of the "I am engaged to a girl that could easily be my great granddaughter" fame? Here I am shooting blanks into her but I am telling you that I do not have an ego. I wonder whether its Holiday or Belichick that forgot to hide their ego?

I have seen wayyyyy too many times that people's egos get in the way of getting a lot of great things done. Just way to many times including myself. I am not sure who said this but it is greatly apt for the circumstances: "At age 20 we care about what others think, at age 40 we do not care about what others thought about us and at age 60, we realize that they had not been thinking about us at all" . They attributed that to winston churchill or Ann landers but nothing proves that is what google says. Ego is a great inhibitor.

Ryan Holiday is a bit of a hypocrite with this book since he's always promoting himself in his daily stoic emails.

I was looking for this email. I checked SD this morning and then my inbox and I was like "Hmm, I've seen this cover this morning. Where did I see this?" lol

Not understanding ego is an illusion would be the problem. There is an entire religion over 2500 years old that goes over this.

He seems to know what topics are important and how to make the perfect book title. The few times I've read portions of his writings scared me off. It felt like he was re-organizing and repeating ideas without truly understanding them or living them. For me, the jury is still out, but I'm not in a hurry to find out.
