Didn't realize they charged tax on soda.

might just be deposit (e.g. if sent to OR, 10¢ per bottle/60¢ a six pack added on, can get all of it back by bringing bottles in for recycling)? dunno about your situation tho

  • Groceries are generally exempt from sales tax in New Jersey. This includes unprepared foods like fruits, vegetables, bread, and dairy products.
  • However, soft drinks are a specifically listed exception to this grocery exemption. New Jersey defines "soft drinks" as non-alcoholic beverages in liquid form containing natural or artificial sweeteners.
  • This means that sodas, artificially sweetened water, teas with sweeteners, drinks with 50% or less fruit/vegetable juice, and sports drinks are all taxable.
  • Beverages with more than 50% fruit or vegetable juice, or that contain milk or milk products (including substitutes), are not considered soft drinks and are exempt from sales tax.

Just look for diet milk coke and you're good!

Soda I have been ordering from Amazon lately has been very close to expiring and the taste shows it. I think I'm done. Just FYI

Probably something like CT where they have a "junk food" tax.

Don't drink this crap, it's pure chemicals.Ya'll are the reason hospitals are making record profits off the taxes that we work for. Hospitals love that you eat fast food and soda. Future business for them to treat your big back ailments.

Is it crazy to think that soda is cheaper than some carbonated waters?

Maybe i'm not well informed, but doesn't soda contain water AND more addatives/ingredients?

Usually in production, more things that are included/used in producing usually equals higher production costs.

When I moved to Chicago in late 2017 a matress salesman told me that is was cheaper to buy booz instead of sugary drinks (because of the soda/sugar tax)

Kind of reminds me of a strange type of policy that would allow soda to be cheaper than water.
