I'm surprised at how many current motherboards are incorporating BOTH USB4 and USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 for 40 and 20Gbps in the same product -- but I fear it won't last long, since the USB spec does not REQUIRE downward compatibility like that.

Probably 25 years. HAMR won't be the last capacity boost.
Hard drives can be made for dirt cheap. They will be cheaper than SSD for a very long time to come.
Only question will be how cheap SSD gets, impacting HDD margins.
