eugh, these look like an eyesore. Probably good if you have a sideyard or garden that needs illumination for absurdly cheap. Otherwise, using these in a front yard or something seems like it's counterproductive.

I imagine the plastic housing will get hazy in a matter of weeks

The plastic housing stays clear for about a year -- but that's about as long as the battery and solar panel last.
They are quite dim, but provide a decent mood lighting effect for four to six hours after dark if that's what one desires.

Is the battery removable? Can rechargeable units be swapped out?

These are great to throw in my camping box. I use them to mark out paths so if I jump out of bed fast and want to grab something or get my feet onto the paved road so I can head toward the bathrooms, it's no big deal if I forget my flashlight.
