I've re-read the first sentence a dozen times to make sure I didn't miss it. It says there is one stop in between the two locations. It doesn't say where that stop is.
Stop is in Tokyo (HND)

I also have a friend who is stationed at the military base but is that on a different island of Okinawa?

As for your friend, there are military installations from the south to the north -- which branch of service? If your friend is Air Force, that's Kadena AB, which is right in the middle. If Army, there's one installation just to the northwest of Kadena called Torii Beach (but could be at Kadena, too). If Navy, either Kadena, Camp Lester (if medical), or on the eastern side at White Beach. If your friend is a Marine, there are a slew of installations, though the biggest one is Camp Foster -- they have shifted the Marines around though, so I'm not sure how they're scattered about now.
If go, plan to snorkel or, even better, scuba dive. It's a fantastic place to dive, and there is a huge variety of terrain and critters to see. If you can take a trip to some of the nearby islands, it's breathtaking. I took a boat trip out to the Kerama islands (on the map, it says Keramashoto National Park), and that was the best scuba diving I've done -- pristine coral reefs absolutely bursting with life. I'd love to go back.
I have been to japan many times but I have never been to Okinawa. I have always wanted to go and would love to hear some of SD's perspective. I don't think there are trains so going by car or bus takes a while to get around on these roads? Is that correct? What is a good area to stay in?

I went in October 2024. It's a beautiful place but very little public transportation outside of buses. It's best to get a rental car so you can see the whole island. I spend a majority of my time up in the north near Nago.
