  • Lightweight, stable and comfortable, the highly adjustable Roc Loc 5.5 MIPS Fit System allows you to quickly and easily tune fit tension and fore/aft tilt using a single hand

Any way to find out the manufacture date of these helmet?

The material strength will degrade over time even when stored in warehouse -- slightly better than exposed to sun but not immune to it. It's recommended to replace every 3-5 years. If they are manufactured too early then you get less usable life.

I can't find the study now. But when I researched it, the only study on helmets that wasn't funded by a mfg found that older helmets outperformed newer ones. Might be survivorship bias. I'm rocking my 25 year old helmet and have no plans to change.

I think we will all agree. Those that wear helmets are the smart ones and anyone who rides without one takes their chances.
Been riding for 50+ years and I always wear a helmet, so does my wife and my kid.

Here's a good video on this topic

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1HgInvm-gY

I used to be very absolutist about always wearing a bike helmet, but my views have become more nuanced. I still almost always wear one when riding, and would recommend the same for most people (especially outside of places like the Netherlands with insanely good bike infrastructure). But I don't quite view it with the same nigh-religious fervor anymore.

It's never good to be too dogmatic about anything. If somebody, say, decides to hop on a bike share for a short trip and doesn't have a helmet with them, I'm not going to judge. The risks are relatively low for any individual trip. They start to add up if you never wear one.

I always recommend trying on a helmet before just going by what VT test says.

Those ratings are a blessing and a curse.

Abundance of data should be used to weed out really bad ones but shouldn't be dismissed or you choose one over the other just because of the rating superiority even though one with higher rating isn't comfortable.

If they are 4 stars and above (about half of them), then they are acceptable. Try on and get one that YOU are comfortable with. Highest rated most expensive helmet is useless if you don't wear it if they are uncomfortable. Protection level diminishes greatly if the design forces you to wear them incorrectly as well.

Fit and comfort should be right up there along with the safe design (rating).

Also, there were some tests done that warns against FAKE expensive helmets (Amazon/Ali Express). If $200 helmets are being sold for $50 or lower, then you should be weary about them (one of the reason to NOT get super expensive helmets at a bargain unless you can vet the supply chain)

Well he's not really judging. The point is it's a "risk" no matter how long the trip is.

Can you really assess the structural integrity of the item just by looking at it?

How do you know that they havent been abused? Are they truly like-new?

If so, where are you located/do you ship?

grew up in the 70s and 80s. It's a bicycle. I'll never wear a helmet.
