Western Digital's official site has WD Gold Enterprise Class SATA HDD - 14TB (Model Number: WD141KRYZ) [westerndigital.com] for $229.99 with free shipping after applying the code WDGOLD.

Seems like a decent deal for a brand new enterprise grade hard drive with a 5 year warranty. It's better buying this rather than a "refurbished drive" that has been heavily used and abused in a corporate environment for years IMO.

so is this a good price?
Yeah I just paid more per TB for a WD Red Pro 18TB just last week, this would have been tempting. The external HDD's that always go on sale are cheaper, but they're also trash drives 99% of the time.

Which is a good drive to put inside the Apple Time Capsule from 2013. It does auto Time Machine backups but at slower rate. I want a dependable slower drive for data backup

Ultrastar originated at IBM. It was the enterprise cousin of the consumer Deskstar. Most models were good drives.

On another note, do the Golds "feature" PWDIS?
Yes, Ultrastar, Deskstar, and Travelstar all originated under IBM. However, that portion of their business was bought by Hitachi over 20 years ago. There's been a ton of acquisitions in the storage business over the decades. When WD bought HGST, Toshiba got part of WD's 3.5" business and WD got their 2.5" facility.

I'm not sure if any WD Golds support Power Disable and I can't find documentation either way. I still find it curious that it's so common on Ultrastars yet on very few Exos drives.

I don't think it'll stack with this. I tried stacking a student discount and it didn't work (they only needed to verify an edu email for me, didn't have to be a student).

I should add that the student/teacher discount is 20%. [westerndigital.com]

Hopefully there's 15% cash back for labor day. I'd buy to replace 10 year old shucked reds in a NAS

I've been eyeballing a 10TB WD Purple Pro for my Blue Iris camera recording system. This gold version is cheaper/bigger.
Is this better than even Purple for video surveillance recording?

Probably doesn't matter for your purposes.

Purple is surveillance. Surveillance is 24/7 write, with rare reads.
Purple drives will always be "better" - in that no matter what, data is written well, although when reading the data, it might be slower/not as fast.

Gold drives are enterprise designed for 24/7 read and writes.
It is technically "better" all around, but not designed for 24/7 writes. Data writes may be less accurate when compared to Purple BUT likely doesn't matter.

Discount code was featured prominently above the drive when searching for it. This deal is likely dead if you also don't see that coupon banner on the site. honestly was hoping the deal lasted a week or so - wanted to try out the device before committing to multiple drives.
