Yeah, WD's nomenclature is a bit ridiculous, but I'm inferring that Gold is the best drive they make; even better than the Red Pros.

Regardless of the colorful and somewhat annoying terminology, IMO it's preferable and sensible to buy this rather than a corporate-used drive that's been heavily abused for years. IMO this is the drive you want for 24/7 NAS RAID use, as normal consumer-grade drives can't take the abuse, and "refurbished" drives aren't that much cheaper anyway...

I have a couple 8GB Gold drives that were fast but hot. These should be cooler (helium IIRC), though I'm betting that similar Ultrastars (and of course Reds) will be even cooler. My favorite drives are relatively low hour DC HC530s. IMO Golds are WD enthusiast drives that are also marketed as specialty server and workstation drives. I suggest further research if buying for a NAS or other limited airflow environment.

Agreed. Lots of folks like the enterprise drives, but I've had several of them fail, and never had a brand new drive fail.

My four are between 16,000 and 24,000 hours (that's half their 5 year warranty). Two of those I got lucky and had just a few hours when I got them as serverpartdeals refurbs. The other two I ebayed recently from someone upgrading their Plex server. I used them to add backup to my Plex server, lol.

For reference I got Two 16TB WD Gold (WD161KRYZ) for $510 ($255 each) Feb 2022. Speed and MTBF is insane but so is the noise. It's a lot noiser. Can't comment on heat as the NAS fan is always on and I only do large bursts type of data transfers then turn the NAS off. Nothing continuous.

The two refubished WD Ultrastar DC HC530 14TB for $200 ($100 each) in June 2024 are still holding up well in a different NAS with heavy continuous reading/writing. I don't mind thrashing those refurbished ones and they are in RAID0. I backup somewhere else. They perform really well also.

Remember, RAID is not a backup!

I have a NVR setup (for a few outdoor surveillance cams) in my bedroom closet and the 14TB Seagate Skyhawk drive seems audibly noticable (loud) when sleeping. Would this WD Gold be any quieter? I have no airflow issues.

Golds aren't really enthusiast drives, that's the Black line. Golds are straight up enterprise class. There's unlikely to be any difference between them and the comparable Ultrastar, as they're likely the same drive, just under a different label. Gold was the name WD used for their enterprise drives under their "rainbow." Ultrastar was Hitachi/HGST's enterprise line. WD bought HGST quite some time ago and has been using their designs in many of their higher capacity drives, particularly the helium models.

Ultrastar originated at IBM. It was the enterprise cousin of the consumer Deskstar. Most models were good drives.

On another note, do the Golds "feature" PWDIS?
