In before the "z-wave is dead" crowd.

Z-Wave is still the best performing platform out there the whole "oh but you need a hub" is just BS. so what, spend $30-$80 once and get a stick or hub or whatever, and you can connect multiple devices to it.

Wi-Fi devices work OK, Matter is steaming bag of disappointment. Matter over Thread is even worse.

Zigbee works well also - but crowds the 2.4ghz space and depending on your router's channels, might interfere with your 2.4ghz network. You need to pre-plan deployment.

I'm waiting on ordering the Home Assistant "Paper towel holder" z-wave coordinator/hub. It's a beast and will allow me to reach further into my property.

Z-wave is, in my opinion, the current king of home automation protocols. That's a hill I'm willing to die on.

I've been using these Zooz switches (various series) all over my house for at least 5 years and have never had a single one fail. Maybe you have a wiring issue?

Buy a spare. I was introduced to these on an SD thread and I have replaced 4 of 13 switches in 5 years. Hopefully this 800 series is more durable as none of them have failed yet, but they are all only a year or two in use. I honestly do appreciate them so long as they work as they are much more practical than smart bulbs.

That's really unfortunate. Curious, have you reached out to their support? They notoriously have some of the best customer support in existence. Curious what load you were running on the switches. I haven't had any issues, but anecdotal experience is always good to hear.

Personally I've had 14 switches in my house for the last couple years and they've been flawless. A couple ZEN71 (on/off), a couple ZEN30 (dimmer + relay double switch) and the rest ZEN72 (dimmer). Installed at least 5 ZEN71/72 at my parents. I also use some dimmer remotes and outdoor motion sensors from Zooz. Running ZWave-JS and Home Assistant with the Zooz USB 800 series controller.

I feel like I sound like a schill right now, but that's really my experience. Love Z-Wave in general and Zooz is top tier.

I bought GE switches years ago when RadioShack went under and those switches had similar lifespans, actually maybe shorter. Like the z-wave platform but I'm disappointed with the lifespan.

Brown out, surges, etc., are notorious for breaking smart switches - always good to have a spare or two... especially if your entire house is 'smart'.

Sorry to hear about your experience, but add another here that have nothing but great things to say about Zooz.

I have over 25 Zooz switches (among other Zooz products) in my house with some near/at least 7 years old. Literally have not had a single one fail. Their customer service is top notch as well. They're quick to respond to any issues or general questions I've thrown their way.

GE switches on the other hand are hot garbage. I started with them before going all in on Zooz and had at least 6-8 fail over the years.

Happy shopping!

Bought a bunch, ZEN72, to replace the flicker inducing el-cheapo FIET smart switches from Costco... Thanks!

If my house was built in the late 70's and none of my light switches have a neutral, are there any smarthome options for me without having to rewire everything?

Are these better than Tapo/Kasa smart switches?

Yes. Way better and locally controlled.

Go Lutron Caseta. It's one of the only options AND they have far fewer LED flicker problems then everyone else that claims neutral free. I've tried MANY. So glad I have neutrals in my new house, Zooz switches have more tap features I use allll the time.
