this one is cheap of course, and supports wired connections but other than that what's the reason y'all are buying this? most modern routers are as much capable as most of these cheap switches wrt networking features, isn't it?

Cool. Do you have a link to a $10 router with extra LAN ports?

A switch is how you add ports to your router. If you dont have a need for more ports then you don't need a switch.

Your router in your laundry closet has 4 LAN ports, you connect one to get internet to your office/game room upstairs.
You wanna hardwire every device in your media room (ps5, switch, gaming pc, docking station for work etc)
how do you think you will do that?

erros. Little squares that have one line out, they tend to divide your network into 1 wireless an 1 lan from some readings. Its apparently new and hip. I got mine at the thrift for pennies on the dollar or I wouldve got some proper gear I can configure. I expect its caught on due to its (claim of) ease of setup and being advertised to normies by amazon/apple/some tv program im unaware of. Comes default ready to connect to amazon home network. Sadly, wasnt the easeiest router I ever set up an the forcing 2 networks is the craziest thing rarely ever seen. Supposedly the newest model 6 or 7 has fixed this.
Oh its just a small white box too. So definantly is attractive to apple users who want matching gear. WHile a W7 black and red asus router with 4 antennaes could look trashy to someone not worried about controlling their router settings.

New to this, we are building a home and have the Ethernet jacks in just about every room. I don't see the "in" jack from the wall to give the 5 ports Internet. What am I missing or can any of the 5 be used as the "in"?

Yes. All ports are the same, data rates are symmetric. You'd need more expensive gear with a lot of ports before you'd start having 1GB normal ports + 10GB upstream ports.
