Good console for playing N64 and PSX roms on. Some Dreamcast and GameCube too. If you're wanting PS2 though, you'll need to spend a bit more

Emulation has really been catching on lately and I love it. There's no better value for your money entertainment wise, as you can play hundreds of what used to be first tier flagship games as long as you are fine dipping your toes in the high seas.

I bought a RG477M lately and having a blast with old school arcade games (unlimited continues for Metal Slug? Yes please!) and even some lighter Switch games.

Thank goodness the wood grain 405v is sold out, I almost bought something I definitely do not need! (I have a 406v, but I just love that woodgrain shell lol)

just saw a deal in here recently for the 406v for $110... lot more bang for your buck with that. retroid classic is also worth looking at but it has no joysticks and the cheaper 4gb variant is oos.

highly recommend anyone looking at these check out the links op shared to retro catalog. great resource

Is this overkill for a system if I just want to play up to Sega Genesis games?

Yes. You can spend about $40-$50 and get a good Anbernic for that purpose

What's the main difference? Also isn't the touchscreen a battery hog? Not sure how you would play DS games, probably switch back and forth between top and bottom screens?

So many models at that price. It comes down to your preferred shape and size.
Any of the Anbernic RG XX devices, or the RG Arc, or TrimUI or Powkiddy device. Just get something with an IPS screen and good controls. I like the RG35XXH but there are larger (RG40XXH), smaller, and vertical, and flip devices and they are all fine for Genesis

Can this hook up to HDMI and then do 2-player metal slug or even Mario Party (Wii) 4 player? Or anything out there like that? Willing to spend couple hundred.
That would be the ultimate switch killer.

For Wii you need better systems like Retroid pocket, Ayn Odin, Legion Go S, Steam Deck, ASUS ROG. The higher the tier, the better the experience.
