I bought a RG477M lately and having a blast with old school arcade games (unlimited continues for Metal Slug? Yes please!) and even some lighter Switch games.

Is this overkill for a system if I just want to play up to Sega Genesis games?
Yes. You can spend about $40-$50 and get a good Anbernic for that purpose

Any of the Anbernic RG XX devices, or the RG Arc, or TrimUI or Powkiddy device. Just get something with an IPS screen and good controls. I like the RG35XXH but there are larger (RG40XXH), smaller, and vertical, and flip devices and they are all fine for Genesis
