Like I don't care about the mechanical gears and so on, but I do care about how beautiful the outside of the watch is. But even with a $450+ smartwatch, the designers seem to automatically go into "cheap silicone looking strap, rectangular (or huge 46mm) case, thick plastic bezel..."
Feels like there's an underserved market for Tissot or some lookalike digital watches.

i remember hearing that automakers intentionally wanted their EVs and hybrids too look like an "electric vehicle" and not like a "conventional" car. i wonder if the same marketing reason applies here

Early smart watches used to look like actual watches. Moto 360, early Samsung classics, a few large LG watches. The software sucked but the hardware looked nice. Rusty only One Plus and Huawei are making nice looking watches. Only one can be purchased in the US. Everyone else makes a calculator on your wrist.
