NOTE THESE ARE NOT REGULAR TENNIS RACKETS. They are for "Red Ball Tennis" which is a new game I guess made to compete with Pickleball? They are much smaller rackets and low compression kids balls.

Using red dot balls (large, unpressurized, less bouncy tennis balls) to teach young kids tennis using a small marked off section of a tennis court has been around a while. The development progression is from red ball to orange ball to green ball, then finally regular yellow balls. The newer development is the USTA pushing red ball play on pickleball courts.

Not really, take one look at the US Open crowds. tens of thousands.

Take a look at the crowds for pickleball's pro events, dozens, I tell you, dozens!

Pickleball picks up a LOT of very casual people who give it a try,
play some with their kids and that's about it.

I remember the racketball craze and how they said it would replace tennis.

That said, if you want to play pickleball, good for you.

The two-week US Open has the highest attendance of any sporting event. I play both and cannot sit through 5 minutes of watching pickleball. However, pickleball is growing much faster than tennis because it's much, much easier.Anyway, that's why the USTA pushes the red ball, green ball for youths. Regular tennis balls can bounce over a child's head, making it frustrating to learn.
There's a lot of asterisks needed to make that statement. I saw it reported as well but I'd like to punt out the world cup brings in over 3 million to the area. And the cricket would cup brought in 1.25 million over 5 days and most of those people actually went to the stadiumBut I agree pickleball is not a threat to tennis

Absolutely! And as a Tennis Academy board member, pickleball helps revenue. But, most of the players lack court etiquette and injure themselves all the time.
Loving the US Open this year!

Crashing out for me with "authentication error". Cleared cache and still showing up. Kits have been up for free for a few weeks so they might be out too, I suppose.

From a little research, it does look like this is a pickleball/tennis mashup.

I will be giving mine away! I have quality tennis racquets. I guess whatever they wind up being, I will find someone who can use them. Cool

Have you seen anyone on public tennis courts these days? A lot of them are being converted for pickleball. Not to say it will be watched more compared to tennis, but it is a much more popular sport for all ages to participate in, and not just people who try it with their kids.

As others noted, it is a lot easier\physically demanding game to play, esp. in doubles which is more popular in pickleball than is singles. Less mobility needed, less endurance and less athleticism. Add in that one of if not the most difficult parts of tennis is the serve, which in pickleball is basically a lot easier\bordering on a joke imo. As such it is going to appeal to a lot wider audience, especially among the retired\older crowd. It is what it is. As a spectator sport, tennis has nothing to worry about imo compared to pickleball as watching doubles pickleball is imo the equivalent of watching a ping pong match.

My 2 cents.

You are correct. While going down that rabbit hole, I was surprised to see Indy 500 is the largest single day event. Mainly due to capacity.

The Indy track is 2-1/2 miles, a horse racing track is about 1 mile, a football field fits inside a 1/4 mile track (remember high school?). Comparing the total attendance over a fortnight vs. a single-day event means very little.

In bay area, I do see still lots people playing tennis. I teach my kids to play tennis/pickle ball and I wouldn't say pickle ball is easier. I'd say tennis is way harder to get started for sure but they require different skill sets when you become better. They are both physically demanding in different aspects when you get to intermediate level.

When trying to actually sign up for the free gear, "age verification" attempts kept failing using Safari on an M4 Mac Mini. Switched to Chrome and it went thru without issue. Thanks OP

Going to get a racket and give it to a friend. I will then proceed to double bagel him and laugh.

Quote from OrangeKite2617 :
i think tennis is losing out to pickleball real bad. pickleball for the win!
From someone in the industry 365 days a year
  • Pickle had stolen many rec players from tennis
  • More average to retired pro tennis players turned to pickelball bec they cant hang in tennis
  • Pickleball was responsible for a ~20% increase in medical related visits in hospitals/doctors in the area of courts
  • Padel has and is coming on stronger than pickleball now

Conclusion: Pickleball will be continually played by the people who can't compete in tennis and padel, Except for the people actually making money and winning trophies from it, they're the only real athletes. And then in the older crowd so many more getting injured every year that they are forced to quit pickleball and now it's hard for them to play tennis as well. Pickleball is still popular with the lazy crowd of youngsters and middle aged people but the more competitive ones are going to Padel. Tennis has its ups and downs but it's an evergreen sport and then some one else said pickleball is much more akin to racquetball and platform tennis et cetera and I said this a couple of years ago but in a few more years all these clubs that spent a lot of money to transform into pickleball courts will be sorry because the play traffic will definitely decrease as tennis makes the recovery and Padel increases and the older crowd will realize it's just too harsh for them to play on the hard court and stay healthy. So at the end of the day pickleball will be played mostly by lazy youngsters who don't want to put the effort into actually learning a sport but just go out and fool around, and the very healthy elderly... Pickle is also much harder to play in singles, you actually need to be pretty quick and athletic to play singles so if you're just two people you're going to get bored really fast because you have to work really hard to get to the balls, so having four players is pretty much a prerequisite... Competitive singles pickleball is actually a real sport... Pretty small demographics.

It's not a new game, it's stupid USTA and all these organizations trying to sound all cool and special but it's the same beginner ball that kids are supposed to start with and therefore these rackets are most likely very small for very young kids which is exactly what I need as demos for some of my very young students because I don't have a lot of them and when I do have them like I do actually right now, it'll be nice to have these available for them to use instead of a large regular junior racket which is still way too heavy for them.

I don't think anyone thought that two free racquets coming with red balls were going to be high quality so I'm not sure why it's even a comparison?
And I'm just curious, what is a "quality racquet" to you?

so pass on this? Thought my kids would enjoy them, but dont want to make them a slave to the red ball machine.
No don't let other people's damage past ruin your experience, this has nothing to do with anything targeted or anything, this is much better than going out to a store and buying brand new racquets from a wide selection for a ridiculous price... Just make sure the grip size is ok for them. And this is not going to cause you to be a slave to anything but you may need to buy a few more red balls though, you should have at least 10 to 15 of them so you don't spend half the time just picking up balls.
