serious question: are mousepads even necessary anymore? i thought they were for ball type mice. now everyone is some sort of IR/laser

Probably not but some of the new electric desks have marble-like surface, and optical mice don't function well on slippery surfaces. Also, the pad has sentimental value made with a cherished picture.

It'll likely glide better. I would never use one without a pad, as it likely will ruin the pad on the mouse and scratch my bamboo desk.
