I had it for a year or two before they kicked me off. Price was always $5.99. Now I do a yearly subscription with discounted apple gift cards but it doesn't include TV. Not sure of a cheaper way.

i used to get around these type of student verified deals by using an old .edu email and just sending screen shot of past transcript or page of student webportal. now sheer ID requires more.
