If you're buying a 3 Ton stand, make sure you get the version with the 11 3/8" min height, and not the 11 1/4" version.

FYI - If you have many of the old 3 ton jackstands - officially recalled or not - HF will give you $30/pair in a gift card for them. Use the gift card and upgrade to safer stands for free.

It never hurts to leave your jack under your car in slight contact just in case. But it could help save you some day.Sure, that's not the designed purpose of it, but this is still good advice. A backup is always a good idea no matter how smart you think you are or how well you know your equipment, physics, and engineering.

Which is better
There are a few YT videos now that document the differences, but the people on Reddit caught on a while back.

Harbor Freight can use multiple suppliers for a specific product, and while they sometimes distinguish a certain product with unique item numbers, that's not always the case. In those situations, different UPCs provide the clue.

It's not just jack stands, but jacks, and a lot of other stuff. Seek the online manual for any one product on their site, and one can be greeted by multiple versions, one for each specific UPC/supplier.

Or look closely at their coupons, which often show one product, but list multiple item numbers applicable to that coupon.

In this instance, don't trust the product photos, either on the box or the website.

The easiest way to distinguish between the two different versions of the 3-ton stands is to check the dimensions, and weight. The "better" version with the thicker post (which is the largest difference) is a bit shorter, and heavier.
AI slop. The better version is 11 3/8, the other is 11 1/4.

Some people aren't simpletons, and do like to understand why things are the way they are.

Remember jack stands are supposed to be in combination of the jack, so if one fails you don't get crushed
This is not true. The point of jack stands is to remove reliance on seals in a hydraulic pump. a hydraulic jack should never be a factor in your safety plan. if you don't trust your jack stand supports you need more jack stands that fully depend on mechanical connections.

Oh really? Then how did I die last month when that car crushed me while using those Daytona jack stands?

Never trust your life on hydraulic seal, especially if the seal is over 15 yr old. Buy four jack stands and use two per side if you're the paranoid type. I use a cheap jack to get the wheels 1-2" off the ground. Remove the jack once both jack stands are in place. Plenty of room to work under the car!

I think CrankyBastard's comment is helpful. Honest mix ups happen all the time, which is why it's important to fact check. Short answers are fine, but there's really no need to criticize someone for providing references.

The metallic orange and purple are the nicest looking of the bunch.

So this is over kill for Toyota Corolla? Ground clearance is 5" Frown

Need a scissor jack stand however heard this is great starter and more durable. Don't want scissor jack to break when attempting to replace tires. Thought?

Even though it says min. height is 11 3/8 in. on the site you may get a box that is min. 11 1/4 in. ?

You must have missed the huge recall that Harbor Freight had on their original jack stands. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)
