I got a 4-pack of digital refrigerator thermometers and put one on each shelf. They track current, minimum and maximum temperatures. I set the fridge temperature to the coldest available setting. After the refrigerator doors haven't been opened for 10+ hours I opened the door and checked the temperature. The top shelf is 36 degrees. 2nd shelf is 39, third shelf is 43 and the bottom shelf is 46. Keep in mind that's with the fridge on the coldest setting. You can't really keep perishables at 46 degrees. Not unless you're a fan of food poisoning.
A Whirlpool repair technician came to check it out and determined the refrigerator is working as designed. No air vent restrictions, no return air restrictions, airflow fan functioning properly, nothing out of spec. Then he started a song and dance about item placement, shelf distribution, put the good stuff on the top shelf and use the bottom shelf for stuff like veggies or fruits… I didn't pay $1,200 for a refrigerator with only one (barely) usable shelf!
A couple other things I dislike about this one:
The controls for the water and ice center are mechanical switches covered with a layer of plastic. Mechanical switches will wear out or break pretty easily and the plastic covering will begin to crack with repeated use. My old microwave had exactly this kind of control panel and the plastic cover over the mechanical push buttons started cracking in about 4 years.
A minor gripe is that the LED light in the water and ice center doesn't automatically light up when you're dispensing water or ice like my old Kenmore fridge did.
On the plus side, the freezer seems to work well and the ice maker has been working correctly. It has a much larger ice bin than most modern refrigerators in this size class. Unfortunately reaching into the ice bin is cumbersome because the little access port is barely large enough for one hand, let alone an ice scoop.
