If you want to connect your phone to a TV to play from phone on bigger screen. One practical application is an older TV (with HDMI, but not smart and no wifi capabilities) in a camper/RV. You can stream Netflix or whatever through your phone and onto the TV.

I know this is exactly what SOMEONE out there needs but for the life of me I cannot figure out how this is useful

it doesn't really help when the manufacture post some of the worst use cases in their promotion picture (such as the 5th image.. like why would you ever use it for that purpose?)
it is useful for the following scenarios where you
1. have single USB interface on your device
2. want to display videos over HDMI for long period of time, and need to charge the device
3. you want the lightest possible solution so you are not holding your device together with a usb c hub in your hand.
so some of the use cases are like playing videos you have on your tablet to a TV in the hotel room. or cast pictures to TV from a hand held console like switch.

If anker did a firmware update on this to allow for use with the nintendo switch 2 this would be great.
If you want switch 2 just grab the Hagibis Switch Dock 8k/60 100W
That's assuming they used the same chipset as those. iirc I think it's a firmware update for a specific series of chipsets from a particular OEM that got the S2 connectivity to go through. They state it's not compatible with Switch or Switch 2 however so this won't be suitable for that usecase.

With USB-C PD 3.1 (I am hopeful that this cable supports the standard), a lot of laptops are coming out with 140w requirements. You can give up 1 USB-C port and get 2 purposes - charging and an external display. My work PC has a plug, a USB-C monitor, and an HDMI monitor. With my next laptop, I could get rid of a cable.

Unless you specifically want the smaller form factor, I think most people would be equally or better served with any of the other generic USB-C hubs/dongles on the market. https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Mult...0DXJQT19B/ (from Anker themselves) https://www.amazon.com/Baseus-Doc...0C85759QD/ https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Rev...0D1XN2LF1/ (this one has an Ethernet port)
Those options are both cheaper and offer most of the same functionality, except that the PD passthrough is 100 watts instead of 140 watts from the device posted in the deal. You get a lot more functionality and flexibility with a full dock/hub vs an HDMI-only cable.

Obviously, not really necessary if you've already got a display with USB-C & PD output.
