They could definitely not be a subwoofer. These will not have the frequency range to get even close to the required range of a subwoofer. They could technically be used (1 of them) as a center speaker but it would be about the worst possible single speaker for a center channel you could think of. These could be atmos (up-firing front L/R) or they could be used as rear speakers. I use a similar Sony set of atmos speakers as my rear speakers (for a smaller room) and they work great for that use case.

these are definitely only big enough to be atmos/height speakers, but i guess if you have a really small space you could feasibly wire these up as rears/surrounds..although in a small space i might just opt for a soundbar instead, just to not have to run the wire..
