Got this a week or two ago for the same price. Don't bother. The grabber thingy is too big and bulky to make it around turns in the piping and doesn't even go through our bathtub drain because that has a grid pattern. The orange things would actually be ideal, but they are too short to get to the places that my Velcro wire I've been using can't reach. The white Velcro wires that come with this are also too short. The one tool I had high hopes for is the very long thin flex wire with a Velcro tip at the end. Turns out it's too thin and will just bunch up instead of going around turns in the piping. I tried every single tool included, and every single one failed. Waste of $6.

I've tried the white thing I it worked great for umclogging my slow draining sink. I don't know what gets built up in my sink but it's like black goop mold and this broke it down really well as well as pulled up some hair. That one tool alone was worth it for me. I can't speak for the rest of the tools as I have not tried them yet.

Not a bad set if you keep your expectations realistic. I read the length in the description so it's obvious none of the tools are going to get "deep into pipes" when the longest is slightly over 5' long. The plastic things are great in my experience if you have people in your house with long hair and need to clean bathroom sink drains and bathtub/shower drains. There are 3 in my house with shoulder length or longer hair, so it's a monthly task for me. Especially since I'm bald and I can say "Well, I cleaned hair out of the drains and we know it's not mine!"

Are there similar devices for the consumer market that are worth it though? If so what kind of price can one expect to pay for one that is actually effective?

Bought something like this years ago for a bathroom sink. I used the orange plastic one and it worked great, haven't had a problem since, but use it every so often just to see, and it rarely pulls anything up. Just used it in the shower a few days ago with similar results. Yeah, the orange things could be longer, but it you push it in to the hilt, it's been plenty long for the two drains I've used it on. Tried chemical drain cleaner first on the sink, didn't work worth crap. Didn't bother trying that with the shower as I figured this would work.

thx! "instead of going around turns in the piping" was the signal.

Consider something more robust like an auger so you can use to clear different drains like bathtub, shower and sink. It's more expensive but should last longer:
