Building the space shuttle was the hardest kit 9 year old me ever did. Broke the dowel that holds the flaps, improvised with a piece of wire so the shuttle never glided right, was rear heavy and crashed... lol.
All these kits now don't need assembly. Old kits were real model kits, nothing was pre-built. You had to assemble --everything--. The only "made piece" was the nose cone, otherwise you were cutting dowels to length, gluing the flaps onto the dowel, even painting and gluing every little plastic fuel line that ran down the main fuel tank. Great memories!
