Yeah, I love mine too.
It's a solid NAS with great software. Not the best price of all time, but if you think the 423+ will be discontinued (like I do) it's a good time to snag one.

I've been reading that the new versions require Synology disks? or can you still load shucked drives in there?

Depends on use. For small office of 50 people accessing tiny files it's quite good; for a home user it's useless. SSDs are good for fast storage - put your docker containers, your metadata, and your other fast stuff on the SSD, and use the HDD array for media and bulk files.

probably on other models but not the 423+.
