I know roomba gets a lot of flak here. but I bought a j7 2 years ago and it's been rock solid and way better than my roborock at not running over cables and shoes and socks and whatnot. lidar kinda sucks for obstacle avoidance.

I own a very old Roomba I got from a thrift store for $15 and will say the the core vacuuming function of getting dust and dander out of carpet works excellent for my old blind and dumb Roomba.I have been robo-vac shopping lately and it seems to be a common theme reading reviews on the internet that Roombas are very good at actually vacuuming, which seems to be something of a weakness for a lot of other brand robotic vacuums. While I agree that if they have software and hardware flaws they deserve whatever criticism they get, at the price point of this post people looking to try out automated vacuuming could do worse than a Roomba vacuum.

Any robot vacuum without lidar is a hard pass, unless you just want a sub $50 machine to bounce around randomly to clean.
Where can I find a sub $50 machine that uses randomization to clean and is presumably not connected to the internet? I'd happily take that over a robot vacuum that captures images, video, lidar scans and is internet connected.

I always thought this was a weird push. As a person with several pets I would rather my roomba run bouncing over areas 5 or 6 times then charging instead of running over them once and thinking it was efficient and quitting. I have a husky and 2 American Eskimos i can't run a regular sweeper over the carpet once and it get everything so the thought that a little portable device will is just odd to me. We currently have 4 roombas and have had everything from bottom of the line to top and the dumb ones tend to end up full more often than the higher end ones.

Yes. j7 adds obstacle avoidance and remembers the map so you can command it to clean specific rooms or areas.
Plus version adds the dock that empties the robot.

If you want only the j7 without the self emptying dock, it's $130 at woot.

Avoid it. I bought it and I'm six months needed to be sent in for repair. Less than 3 months later needed another repair which the denied and said that the 2 yr warranty had been "satisfied" and completed during the first repair since it exceeded the amount paid, even though the ad on eBay does NOT state that's how the warranty works. I asked them to be refunded the cost of the unit instead of repair again since I'd be out of warranty and money should it break down a 3rd time in less than a year after purchase. I won't buy another roomba. I just bought a Dreame instead

Fwiw I have a Roomba 761 that I got from eBay in a deal like this several years ago. Been through 4-5 batteries but the core vacuum function works still better than two newer Roborocks I since bought and returned. I want to buy a replacement or upgrade for app but not sure which one of these to go with. Any tips from non haters?

I have been using J7+ for few years now and extremely happy with it. It might need little attentions time to time but as long as we keep up with the maintenance it is a wonderful machine.

Don't buy irobot. They are complete junk and they don't stand behind their products.
