I think my best bet is waiting for this Holiday season.
Wondering if/when prices on the current gen will bottom out, but it appears if you're on 40-series, or even 30-series, waiting until the Supers come out makes sense. Even if you're on older series, if your current use case allows you to wait - you may be able to snag an even better price.
The RTX 5080 Super's rumored $999 MSRP may be reality (crosses fingers) - as long as supply is ample to keep the scalpers at bay. Looking at recent price history, though - WhoTF bought 5090's at $6K?!? [Source: "Big GPU Price Drops - RTX 5090, 5080, & 5070", Graphically Challenged, YouTube]

Also not direct comparison, but a base modem macbook air cost $999 in 2017 - still costs $999.
