The instructor is likely directing you toward something with weighted keys to feel like an analog piano, which this has. Roland's FP10 is the one that's usually more directly compared to the P45/P71 (same piano, P71 is the Amazon model), and the FP30X is a step above that. Better speakers, more and higher quality voices/tones, support for a 3 pedal add-on. The FP30X is more comparable to Yamaha's next step up P125.

Biggest difference is going to be the feel of the hammer action, and that's entirely personal preference. That's why it's recommended to try some different options in a store before buying. Without taking that into consideration, the FP30X is a strictly better piano on paper than the P45, but if your kid would end up preferring the Yamaha action then that would be the better choice.

SEPT2526 still works. They don't let you enter it until the last step when you enter your payment details before placing the order.

How is this compared to yamaha p71?

My kid started piano classes and instructor asked p71 or similar for home practice.

After "upgrading" from a 2006-era Yamaha YPG-625 to a Yamaha P-45, I am overall happy but a bit disappointed in the sound engine on it. The tone just doesn't sound even close to as good as the YPG-625 unfortunately, although I love the action on it. How does action on a weighted keys Roland compared to these Yamaha keyboards?

Yamaha also makes jet skis and motorcycles, I'm not sure I trust them to be good at instruments, too. /s

Ps: google it with "vs" and you'll get all the AI-fueled comparisons you need. Some much better than others.
You don't know much about Yamaha then my guy.

I'm confused, I was sure to add "/s" just to be clear. There's a decades-long joke about people not knowing that Yamaha started in music. Their logo is tuning forks. I'm starting to worry about SD a little Smilie

But I was serious about "vs" in google, it's usually a quick way to get side-by-side specs on any two things for sale. Most of the time people here get mad when posters ask others to do basic homework.

That's not really easy to answer without more context. If we're talking like a younger kid that very likely could give up on it I'd just get a cheap $30-40 used 61-key keyboard off marketplace/Craigslist and consider it a throwaway budget, and can always upgrade later if they commit to it.

If it's a more devoted teenager and you're okay with spending more for a 88-key weighted keyboard you might start looking Yamaha P45 or Roland FP-10

thanks for your detailed feedback. I will probably try to find both pianos in the local store before pulling trigger.

I haven't actually played a Roland, only a Yamaha P45 because it's what was available to me (I'm merely a mediocre guitar player, not actually a keyboard/piano player). But to my understanding Roland's action is overall a bit "heavier" with a bigger difference in feel between the high and low end.
Having toyed with some upright pianos owned by family members and using a P45 briefly, I'd definitely be inclined to try a Roland FP10 (or a Kawai ES60) if I ever get one for myself. I can't say I loved the feel of the P45 but I haven't compared to any other digital pianos.
