Fair point. I should have been more precise in my critique of their business model.
You're right that their search and indexing tech is proprietary. My "middleman" comment was referring only to the final generation model (GPT-4, Claude, etc.), which is sourced from other providers (plus their own internal Sonar model).
My preference is to use the synthesis models directly, but I concede that calling the entire service a "middleman" wasn't entirely accurate.

Got the email but already have 1year free Pro I think it was from Paypal so I'm wondering if it will allow a new account. Still, I haven't used it not even once.

Dude I am wondering same thing. I am in the Same boat.
I go back and forth between chapgpt and perplexity. Both are useful. Use everyday throughout the day. The more you use them, the more you will want to use them more.

The perplexity account can't have had a subscription, ever. I tried this with my perplexity account that had the xfinity promo and was denied. And the paypal email was ineligible for reuse for another perplexity account.
In the end i got a $1/mo promo email for PP so I'm using that for now.

I'm a fan of perplexity. I've used it a lot since getting the free year through PayPal. great with search and citations, but less creative imo than ChatGPT and other tools

I go back and forth between Gemini and Chatgpt, it's hard to fit in more than a few platforms at a time (one main and one backup). Well, at least with this thread I am reminded to go back and give Perplexity a shot but honestly, Gemini is taking off for me and it's hard to look back.

Bingo. They're constantly scrambling for media attention (remember when they offered to buy Google Chrome browser?). You're better off going directly to the source and using OpenAI/Gemini/Claude without this trashy middleman.

I don't know what you are attempting to communicate with your screen grab but I went directly to the source and posed the question, something you might have done before spewing incorrect BS, effectively poisoning the data stream. Here's the reply:

I think it's fair, there's like a thousand translator earbuds out there on tick tock, but if they all actually just use an API from Google translate, it makes more sense to go to the source, for free. and likewise an AI that is just a Frankenstein of other people's models and some slight modifications, unless you can get a Free-er better service out of it, is probably inferior
