They are trying to beef up their subscriber numbers so someone will acquire them.

Fair point. I should have been more precise in my critique of their business model.

You're right that their search and indexing tech is proprietary. My "middleman" comment was referring only to the final generation model (GPT-4, Claude, etc.), which is sourced from other providers (plus their own internal Sonar model).

My preference is to use the synthesis models directly, but I concede that calling the entire service a "middleman" wasn't entirely accurate.

I've personally found it to be better than Google for synthesizing answers on complex topics quickly. It's especially great that it remembers context about you to tailor its answers. Perplexity brands itself as an "AI-powered answer engine" and not an AI chatbot. It focuses more on AI-powered search than ChatGPT or Gemini, and its design reflects this use case. This is most noticeable when trying to have a conversation with Perplexity, as it is much less conversational than a chatbot.
