the base model with 32gb and 512gb is usually 2K so while it's an older generation it's still a very capable workstation, with double all the base specs.

I was in the market for an iPad at $299. I said, let's wait for prime day. then they Jack up the price to $329. 🙄

This is actually a decent deal, if you can put the power to use. Keep in mind the Ultra is two M2 Max fused together!
The current equivalent (in performance) would be an M4 Max Mac Studio w/64GB. With 1TB in storage, that would run you $2900 but get you TB5.
Geekbench 6 Multicore and GPU (Metal) is about the same between this machine and M4 Max Mac Studio. They're equivalent with Blender performance as well as with Apple Silicon-optimized AAA games.
However, the M2 Ultra tests only about 60% vs. M4 Max in Cinebench CPU/GPU.
M2 Ultra going to win with video export time.
