On newest Garmin's you need to manual put your fingers on bezel to do a reading
Garmin has something called abnormal heart rate alert however it does not warn for rhythm irregularity. I think alerts you if your heartbeat goes above or below certain thresholds. To detect rhythm irregularities, you would need to use ECG feature which require touching the bezel.

The main proposition though is accurate GPS activity tracking with offline, routable maps and multi-day battery life. That's what makes the sport watches like Garmin and Suunto stand out over Apple and Android watches. WearOS and WatchOS are simply too bloated to every make it past 2 days even on the Apple Watch Ultra 3. The watch in this deal gets 16 days battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 32 hours of GPS + continuous heart rate tracking. For hiking, trail running, and biking, there basically is no other watch that gets adequate battery life with offline maps and GPS. I've tried hiking with the AWU and neither Apple's built-in custom routes nor 3rd party apps (which all require costly subscriptions) come close to the hiking experience on a Garmin (or Suunto).
The other big difference that you kind of just have to use Garmin to understand is that the software is written by developers who really engage in the sports that the watch is designed to track. That's a big difference between Garmin compared to even Suunto, but it's a world of difference compared to Apple and Google/Samsung. It's hard to describe, but the UX of the watch is designed to get out of your way and let you focus on exercise especially with the use of physical buttons and data screens. On Apple/Android watches you are always relying on the touch screen which is hard enough to use while moving, even harder to use when you're sweating, and impossible to use if you're wearing gloves (i.e. mountain biking), it's raining or you're in the water (i.e. swimming or diving).
Activity tracking on Apple/Android watches is incredibly basic and mainly just designed to give you a calorie count. Sure it can record your GPS for activities like running and biking but the GPS on the non-ultra Apple/Android watches are quite frankly terrible just due to using a cheaper and more inaccurate radio. My AW7 and GW7 don't even place me on the correct side of the street and it's always jittering around from one side to the other. Run a mile with an Apple/Galaxy watch and you'll end up running 1.1 miles. Even on a Fenix 6 with single-band GPS, the GPS performance is very accurate and flawless.
What's so special about Garmin watches that they are so expensive? I replaced my Apple Watch with Fitbit and am very happy with that decision. Seems like these have more appropriate battery life so I'm a bit more interested in understanding the value proposition
For some reason I've always had Fitbits fail in a little over a year. Mostly gotten them for free through work health insurance. They work fine for counting steps but Garmin watches are way more rugged.
