I got Proton VPN a couple months ago. Previously used Private Internet Access for 10 years. My experience with both is centered around torrenting:Both PIA VPN and Proton VPN offer 'split tunneling' which I prefer to keep web traffic unprotected and faster. But the implementation is different.- PIA VPN app somehow binds to the app .exe defined in the prevent/allow traffic list ensuring the app only uses the VPN tunnel, if no VPN connection is active, the app cannot connect. Contrast to Proton, you also have a list for the inclusion/exclusion into the tunnel, but if the VPN session is not active, the app could just use any default adapter/gateway (unprotected). This is a great feature in favor of PIA. Or workaround: some apps like qBittorrent allow the user to specify to bind to a Adapter (VPN).- PIA VPN has a persistent "port forwarding" lease for a week or so. If you constantly disconnect/reconnect from the VPN server and use torrenting, this could be a good thing as you don't have to constantly update the port on torrent client. Or it could be bad, as your persistent port from PIA may leak a bit about your fingerprint.- Both offer WireGuard.Overall: - PIA VPN app workflow, settings and usage is much easier to understand.- Proton VPN offers more complex configurations, the connection profiles are messy and the entire UX is not very intuitive. Bigger learning curve.
Thank you for this detailed comparison. Based on what you wrote, I will stay with PIA. I'm also a long term (10+ years) customer of PIA.

why so many people used VPN for? I know some scenarios like public wifi and few others things but what's is the best used?
Other than because I can? Torrents, changing my location when I'm out of the country so I can log in to certain stuff, getting around whatever BS state/country restrictions a govt decides to stupidly implement. At this point, mostly just because I can.

Same, ever since I found out PIA was run by a malware outfit (Kape).

This vs windscribe?
I have a Windscibe 50GB plan that was working fine (for torrents) until a few weeks ago. It no longer works for that purpose. Your use case might be different than mine.

Is this only for new users or does it work for existing users?

Good deal. I just signed up for a year last month, unfortunately. It's been awesome, though. I had been using PIA for years and didn't realize how bad it was. Only got a third of my download speeds. Proton doesn't slow down my internet at all.

Actually, just looked up what I paid last month and it was exactly this deal. Seems like their regular pricing.

I switched over from PIA and have nothing but good things to say. Far less issues with sites blocking and speeds/latency is better. Please note that there is a roll up in the industry for much of the same reason people were buying VPNs in the first place - to monitor traffic and sell data and ads. Proton is good now, but good to keep your eye on the provider. Proton isn't perfect but seems to be the best out there.

proton is not the same as Nord. what issues are you referring to when you say look up who owns the company?
Curious as to what you meant by "proton is not the same as Nord". Is there a problem with Nord that I should be aware of? TIA.

sorry, Nord is probably fine as a vpn. They just spend a lot on marketing. seems the general consensus is to use either Mullvad or Proton

Any good or just another shill Deal?
Been using it for about 5 months, before that had cyberghost for about 6 years. Proton is better, doesn't cause network card glitches if computer goes to sleep while its active. Also, the membership gives you access to their AI Lumo which is completely anonymous for free.
