After 30 years in this hobby, Im shocked these things still sell. Filters like this shouldn't even be made anymore. Cartridge based filters are not only a waste of money, they are damaging to the beneficial bacteria that should be building in your filter. Save the money and have a safer approach to your aquarium BB colony, and go with an Aquaclear/Fluval HOB filter or a canister. They come with a sponge that is easily removed and rinsed under a sink to clean out the gunk. They also come with a media bag, which is what you want in your filter to grow you BB. Cartridge based filters hurt aquariums more than help.

Be aware there is no flow toggle. It's one speed/flow only

I don't use these, but they would work without the filter if you just wanted something that moved water around the tank, right?

I switched from these cartridge based filters to sponge filters about a year ago and my aquarium looks much healthier! Plus I never have to swap filters and sponge filters don't kill baby shrimp like the cartridge ones do. Every once in a blue moon I clean out the sponge but ever since I got rid of the majority of my snails, all has been good, I just top off the water. Go with sponge filters!

What effect did getting rid of your snails have?

Im a very basic hobbyist when it comes to Aquariums. I have this exact filter and almost want to buy this just to get a new clean one as mine is kind of nasty over the years.

I think in the 2-3 years I have had the tank Ive change the filter only 2 or 3 times. The first time I did it based off the instructions. Then as I learned more I ready I should just rinse it in a bowl of tank water to remove the surface sludge. I also swapped it once to start fresh when I had an algae bloom and it was just to much to clean out. This filter has a small sponge at the very end of the water flow. I had thought so long as this is nice and cycled it might be okay to swap a cartridge if needed just because the beneficial bacteria should exist in that sponge and help with cycling the new cartridge.

But either way I dont change mine anymore than maybe once a year, if that. But I try to just clean the top level sludge off and stick it back in.

You're better off with a power head if you just need circulation. Or ditch the cartridge and replace with your own custom cut sponge and media bag.

Glad to hear. But one of the main failures of this design is that it doesn't come with a media bag to grow the bacteria in the filter as all others do. You can purchase your own and pop it in there. But the sponges on these cartridges is minimal at best compared to the others with larger surface area and better made for polishing the water long term. HOB filters so best cleaned monthly. I clean my canisters every 2-3 months since they are larger and can handle the heavier lifting of my large tanks.

I'm not sure that this is one of them, but lots of these over-the-tank filters can be used without the cartridge. I've used medium bags for charcoal, some bio blocks and a handful of polyfil on small tanks for over 30 years, without a problem.
Unless you get one used, canister filters can be pricey and messy, and overkill for small 5-10 gallon tanks.

Canister filters are not made for 5-10 gallon tanks.

There are a few. But there are also large hang-on filters for larger tanks, and even those are less expensive than a comparable canister. I ran a hanger for 5 years on a 30 gallon tank. It was filled with my own medium mix and was simple to maintain, compared with my canister.
