I would like to use this for backing up my PC. It'll be sitting in the closet mostly until I plug it back in weekly to do a file backup. Would this be good for that use?

Man, I normally take the bad reviews with a grain of salt... but reading thru several + just quick googling against WD SA510 SSD flaw and it's not comforting. If you buy this, ABSOLUTELY do the firmware check and upgrade immediately while within the return window. As always, make sure you have backups.

No. SSDs need occasional power on cycles or they forget their data due to capacitative discharge.

You're likely looking for a SSD backed HDD, or you can build your own using literally two SSD in RAID0 backed by a BIG HDD.

I use my old crucial MX500 1TB ssd in an enclosure sometimes doing the same thing. The challenge is this not having dram cache can be a problem if the backups are sizeable. The initial back up might be crazy slow after a short while.

Those crucial MX500 are gems - atleast the ones from 5 years ago that had internal capacitors. I think recently crucial started to cheapen up the MX500?
