These are the step child of Apple MacBooks. A little more money and you can get the 14" M1 Pro which imo is way better and worth buying as it actually is a Pro. At the same and maybe less money, the 13" Air imo is better being a small and lightweight laptop.

This MacBook may have a Pro name but It has the same processor as the 13" MacBook Air M1. It is a MacBook Air with a fan and touch bar. That's why I said it is the step child of the MacBook lineup. It is no where a Pro when considered to the M1 Pro in the 14" MacBook Pro.

Except the processor is akin to the m1 air. I think the forced cooling chassis, speakers and screen is the upgrade.

I tend to agree with you, I'd rather buy the 13" air for its lightness, or the 14" pro for its power and screen. This 13" pro is the worst of both worlds, added weight with little benefit. Coming from the 13" m1 air, I have never felt the need for the Touch Bar or active cooling.Still it's a very capable machine and if someone's looking for this as their main laptop, they won't be disappointed.

Value doesn't equal deal... These are a dime a dozen at this price , just as any product at the prevailing market rate.

Hmm. Then why is the base model m1 air 8gb ram consistently selling for more than this everywhere I look on Craigslist and FB market place?

well
this is the 13 inch MacBook Pro "M1"
this is NOT the 14 inch MacBook Pro "M1 Pro"

Apple made it super confusing (essentially to casual users) with their naming, but the other poster is completely right.

This is a completely different tier/generation of laptop.

This is 99% the intel, last generation mbp. All they did was swap the intel processor for the M1, but everything else is from the last generation.
The 14 inch MacBook Pro "M1 Pro" is the new (current) generation.
