Went twice. I went in late Nov years ago. Celebrated thanksgiving there. Snowy and cold but it didn't stick. Went last year in early Oct. I thought it was gonna be fall like temps. NOPE! Felt like summer didn't end, mostly rain but It was still nice. I heard best time is cherry blossom festival but it can be pricy! Avoid summer because its hot. Nov was great though. I love the cold. Something to keep in mind. Some of the old castles you go will require you to take off your shoes. They don't have modern heating systems so expect cold floors. My toes were freezing.

Japan will definitely have you set-up if you just plan on wearing the new stuff you purchase. They got the right clothes for their seasons in stores. So you don't have much to worry about. Like dressing comfortably. Don't bring so much clothes because you will be shopping and eating!!! I didn't plan on shopping for myself but man they got great comfortable clothes. That's if you plan to wear the new stuff. I didn't because of the whole tax-free purchase. I just wore what I brought and wore all the new stuff this year. I hear the whole tax-free will change starting next year though.
Bring comfy shoes because you will be exploring a lot Something waterproof incase of rain. Light windbreaker will come in handy for those rainy days that gets humid and light to carry if it gets sunny again. That's If you plan on going end of summer beginning of fall. For the time I went in Nov I had a superdry jacket and hoody and ate lots of delicious ramen so that help me keep warm when it snowed up north towards the countryside. I only brought a light bomber jacket and north face windbreaker in oct. Only one day I use the bomber because it was windy but the rest of my 2 weeks there. I could've been in shorts and T-shirt.
You will be shopping I promise you that!

Zipair is great, I don't mind paying for what I just need and paying for extras that I don't really care about. I would definitely fly with them again.

On the wifi, I think they lock down access to everything except their online ordering page. I couldn't get the wifi working for anything else except for ordering items off their menu. I wasn't able to stream any movies or browse any websites with it.

This sounds great except taxis to Narita cost more than the luggage. If you do this and take the train there with the box, how do you transport it - or do you use one of those luggage transport service to do it for you?
There is the option to have your bags shipped to the airport from most hotels.
Back in like 2019, it was like $20 or so to ship both checked bags to the airport.
We just needed to goto the counter at the airport and pick up the bags, then cart it over to the check-in counter.

You can get those 20x20x20 cargo shipping boxes from their version of UPS stores (Yamato Transport is the store's name and has a black mommy cat carrying a baby cat as its logo) for about $4 or so plus some packing tape for one-time use. Beats having to buy an $80 piece of luggage that will probably be of low quality and wont be used again. Leaves you more $$$ to spend! This hack pretty much works best if you are only staying in one city or doing all your shopping in your last city stop.
Thanks. That is a great idea instead of spending money on a luggage that I may never use again. I always travel extremely light, old clothing and dispose afterward while bringing back the bare minimum.

I cannot imagine a 20x20x20 box to be very heavy unless you are buying heavy weight items. Why not use the tape to make a carrying handle onto the train to the airport?

The one thing I am not particularly crazy about Zipair's SFO-NRT route is that it arrives Japan at around 8pm, so by the time you get out of immigrations/customs its already 9pm and then add another 1.5 hrs to on board either the train or private transport to Tokyo (no more limo bus at this time), it will be closer to 11pm by the time you get to the hotel if not even later. Would have preferred the SJC-NRT route which arrives Japan at around 3pm, enough time to arrive Tokyo for a decent dinner and some walking around. Someone in SD posted that SJC-NRT route is only offered in the summer - bummer!

I flew zipair from SFO.. was totally fine. Just be aware that you don't get food, blanket/pillow, or entertainment screen, so bring your own movies/digital things to keep you occupied. Also they weighed my hand carry at check in counter. Get some food and snacks for the flight. They sell food but it's pretty mediocre. For the price it's fine, I would recommend it if you don't need those things I mentioned earlier.

Don Quijote typically sells luggage
I've always just bought like 6000 yen cheapo rolling luggage in Akihabara from the Akibaoo stores to stuff full of souvenirs and snacks and stuff you can buy for cheap at Donki. I then sell the luggage for like $30 on FB marketplace and make some of that money back.

I've found that Don Quijote doesn't always have the best prices for luggage. I guess they know tourists go there to buy cheap snacks but then get taken in by the more expensive luggage options.

I would fly Zipair again. I'm literally on my flight back.
It's a budget airline and you do have to paid for everything, so just bring some food on the way there. On the way back, I just grabbed stuff from the 711 which was fairly priced (not super jacked up). I was hesitant about the 7 kg (15.4 lb) limit but after actually weighing my bag I was way under on my flight to Japan (6.6 lbs for clothes, toiletries, usual stuff + 5.0 lbs for snacks -- which was way overkill). I had to be more strategic on my way back though to avoid checking my bag.
I also think the flight times were really good.
The only issue were
  1. I don't think mobile check in actually works and they advised me to get to the airport 3-4 prior to departure. I didn't budget this time. At the airport, the line to check in was just over 1 hour. My friend told me this was a similar experience he had a few months ago. I usually stroll through security when they start boarding, so getting to the airport this early wasn't ideal for me.
  2. The wifi on the way there was slower than dial up speed
  3. One of my neighbors was a real weirdo but harmless.
  4. If you don't pay for the aisle seat, you'll likely get the middle seat.
With that said, the low price makes up for it, so I'm not really complaining.

Does anyone know a good place to buy a luggage in Shinjuku or even Shibuya? I plan on buying one there to bring stuff home.
If you can travel a bit, Ginza Karen. They have their own house brand line that is made in Japan. Good quality and cheap.
