This has been the current price for atleast a week or two. Been considering this vs an m4. More ram or newer chip.

Same. If you have any info on what's more future proof for standard home office use please let me know. My instinct is to go with the M4 and just pay a little more for the memory. An extra $100 to maybe get another year of use seems worth it.

Getting an M4 vs M3 isn't going to give you even an extra month of use, but getting 24GB over 16GB will get you a few years of extra use.

more context: The vast majority won't notice the difference between M4 and M3 CPU on their day to day use. The differences more likely to be noticed are:
  1. M4 has a 12mp webcam vs 1080p on M3 2. can drive 2 monitors with the screen open, while the m3 only does 2 screens total, laptop included (must be closed to use dual monitors).

Are there skins you can buy that will cover up the god-awful Starlight color?

You can also run 12B llms on there reasonably well. I'm running some sort of quant of Phi4 using Ollama on my M4 Mac Mini with only 16GB and while it takes 10? seconds to load, the responses are almost instant and token per second is very useable.
MLX is probably best but I have yet to find a user-friendly MLX client that is open source (outside of LM Studio, which is not open source).

I don't think we'll ever see that price from retailers for a 1-2 year old MacBook Air. Only on the used market.
But I'm glad 8GB isn't the base anymore, so we won't have to filter those starting with the m4.

Even my 8gb mac m1 is running like a champ. 16gb on macOS will give you years of use (windows is a different story). I would take a m4 over 24gb ram any day of the week both at the same price.
