Based on current sale, its $14.44 for 16 regular Shin (91 cents per pack) and $25.65 for shin black ($1.67 per pack). Shin Black is 76 cents more per per pack (84% more). To each their own, but under $2 for a bowl of better tasting noodles is solid!
Red is spicier. Nongshim kept jacking up its spiciness over the years and it's now at silly level IMHO. Black is still spicy, but not crazy spicy. And there's no comparison in terms of taste: Black wins hands down with RICHNESS. After eating the Black, Red will seem empty--just spicy. You will know what I mean once you try it. Definitely worth the extra cost IMHO but to each his own.
EDIT: Also, Black has somewhat less sodium but much more protein (80%?).
I'm in complete agreement. The Red now just seems like it's just sitting in basic water, while the Black has transformed with richness. I bought both to compare, and still have Red packs remaining. I just can't go for it when I still have Black available; and when the Black is all gone, I just don't feel like eating the Red.
.
I might have to do like these other people and add veggies and egg to make it edible.
Everything else tastes like cup of noodles, once you try the Black version. It's honestly on a different level when it comes to packaged ramen. For one, the noodles are THICKER, and it comes with a second seasoning package that takes it to another level. I love the added mushrooms and extra toppings.
Red is so basic and just pure heat once you've tried this version. I still love the Red version and will usually have it much more since it goes on sale often. The Black RARELY does, and I get the cup version because it's slightly cheaper at times.

The spice packet is smaller to complement the bone broth, that's why there's less sodium.
tip: leave out the spice packet all together, use less water and you'll have a decent approximation of Seolleongtang (ox bone soup).
for those looking to level up their regular red shin cups for cheaper than paying almost 2x per cup for black, go to your local asian market and buy bone broth that they sell in pouches. Costco even sells a bulk pack of these korean bone broth pouches. What you do next is simple, you swap that exact bone broth for the water you would normally use in regular red shin cups/shin noodles.

$21.98 / 16 = $1.37 per pack.
