Campbell's Chunky Old Bay Seasoned Clam Chowder stands out as a pantry soup with a strong Old Bay kick, and it can be especially good when mixed with regular Chunky New England clam chowder or boosted with smoked fish. The deal math also lands well for Subscribe and Save, with totals around $16.79 to $17.27 for 16 cans and a $2.48 per can fallback price. The main knocks are that the seasoning can overpower the clam chowder flavor and the cans may arrive dented in separate shipments. A solid pick if the Old Bay profile is the draw.

  • Old Bay fans who want a clam chowder with a stronger seasoning profile, because the spice blend is the main flavor and it pairs well with regular clam chowder.

  • Families wanting a pantry soup that can be stretched with extra protein, because it works well with tinned smoked fish added in.

  • Shoppers comparing supermarket soup prices, because the per-can price is still below what supermarkets charge.

  • Buyers who want a mild, straightforward canned soup, because the flavor can come across as low quality and unpleasant.

  • People expecting a classic clam chowder flavor, because the seasoning can overpower the clam taste and make it taste unlike chowder.

  • Shoppers who need undamaged canned goods, because cans can arrive heavily dented in a paper pouch.

FWIW, I'm a lifelong Old Bay fan, but I found, at least for me, if you take one can of this with one can regular chunky NE clam chowder, it's very good.

My absolute favorite of all the Campbell's soups. I ALWAYS have a few of these in the pantry. Goes great with some tinned smoked fish added as well for extra protein. Super slick deal. ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ‘

For fish/seafood, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) lists mean mercury concentrations; e.g., clams ~0.009 ppm (ยตg/g) and canned light tuna ~0.126 ppm.

For canned fish, there is evidence of sometimes higher levels (especially certain types like albacore tuna) which are more prone to mercury accumulation.

For soups: There is a study that found measurable mercury levels in various canned foods (not necessarily soups) โ€” e.g., one study found "the highest concentration of total mercury was 315.2 ppb" (~0.315 ppm) in some canned items.

I'm getting my 16 delivered in 3 separate shipments for whatever reason. First one came today, 3 cans shipped in a paper pouch, all heavily dented.
