My beef with seiko autos under $1k is their cheap movement being used. No factory regulation and time keeping is hit n miss. The movements also have bad tolerances so even if u have a watchmaker regulate it, the timekeeping will drift off over time.

I've owned my share of seiko monsters, turtles, mm200 etc and only the mm200 was accurate out of the box (and later got demagnetized).

In $500 range, Hamilton/Glycine/Tissot offer more buck for the price since they use swiss ETA movements (especially Hamilton).

If u care about accuracy, save up and get a Hamilton instead. Or go Seiko solar.

I could be wrong, and not trying to discount any great deals you or others may have found, but 10 years ago there were two Seiko models with similar styling and the same movement, the key difference was the case diameter. One was a quite small at 37mm and the other was either 40mm or 42mm. The former was commonly priced at $50 while the latter was $120+. The smaller version may have also commonly referenced as a pilot watch and larger version a field watch.

Fyi the savings you can get on a grand Seiko will literally cover plane tickets and hotel if you go buy one in japan

Yup. I have a last gen' 007 that went stupid. My only lucky buy was a bronze skyraider from Zelos with a 6497. Paid $500 and they're going over $900 if you find one for sale.

seiko 5's are kinda meant as "disposable" entry level mechanical watches and just fine as daily drivers for people on a budget. i owned about 5 of them from when they frequently went on sale for $50 to $75 each and some of the third party straps and clasps i had on them were more expensive than the actual watches, lol. they're perfect for when you want a nicer watch to wear when you're about to get drunk and you won't have to worry about banging it up or anything. i did have one stop working after about a couple of years but for the cost, i would still say they're worth it.

hamiltons are imo the best bang for the buck midrange watches. i particularly love their h21 movement and i'm one of those people that got stuck on the hamilton line for a while since it was tough to find other watches within the price range that offer similar combination of style, quality and craftsmanship.

Seiko had several models in the $100 range in the last few years. They have moved their price point up like everyone else. Usually, there are upgrades like sapphire crystals or better movements, but not always. The $100 Seiko is mostly a thing of the past.

Less than $100 is not $50, the older models are cheaper and have a older movement. These 4R35/6 was never $50

I think you're talking about the older SNK... models

Sorry if I was not clear. I'm saying 10 years ago, it was 50. I personally bought it 5 years ago for 100. but maybe you're right . I could be talking about other models.

Nearly 100% on websites. eBay used to be great for finding the vintage Seiko's and HMT's. Not so much any more.

my grandfather left me a few HMTs and a Hamilton Khaki Field from his days stationed in India. Beautiful watches! Glad to hear them being recognized even today! I believe they're out of production now.

Yes, unfortunately. You can still find some of the 17 jewel hand-winders…….just not at $5 apiece any more. It was fun while it lasted. I have 10 or so in the collection that are hand painted. AMAZING!
