Receivers are generally swapped out as new technologies they don't support become the new standard, but good speakers don't really have a set shelf life; using a one- to several-thousand dollar receiver to drive a speaker setup that collectively costs below $1k is putting the cart before the horse. Paying the Dirac license fee to calibrate these speakers on top of the price of a compatible receiver is one of the surest way to make a HT enthusiast cry.
It's not like these are bad speakers, but they are still an entry-level 5.1 setup.
You can spend more and get better, but this set is already far better than most average consumers will ever own. Some will never upgrade beyond this, because in the speaker market past this point, the benefits taper off even faster than the prices go up.
If you don't have a nice matched set of surround speakers, this is a good start, and will fully satisfy many.
Not saying these won't sound "okay". That's a lot of firewood for the price! Just my advice is don't try to blow your budget on the everything-all-at-once approach. If you're budget is $450, you can find a MUCH better pair of speakers for that than this complete system will sound.
The fallacy has always been that there is some universal way to define authentically good or bad.
If you do compare them it should be completely obvious.
If not, just means you didn't optimally setup your traditional setup.
Keep in mind this has been going on for quite a long time.
Object based codecs and Dirac just made it much more convoluted.
Both are the real deal BUT you should have the horses 1st to make it worthwhile.

Not saying these won't sound "okay". That's a lot of firewood for the price! Just my advice is don't try to blow your budget on the everything-all-at-once approach. If you're budget is $450, you can find a MUCH better pair of speakers for that than this complete system will sound.
And you're suggesting spending 2/3rds of the Jamo system price to get just a single pair of speakers, which doesn't do anything at all for the home theatre experience most listeners who shop this are looking for.
If you're looking for the best STEREO sound, well, then of course you'll find a better pair of speakers with a $450 budget. But if you're looking to build a 5.1 speaker system on a $500 budget, these are probably the best choice for that need.
They often are looking to spend the least amount especially on sound!
So the likely attraction here is $500 for 5.1.
Thee biggest issue, the only way to actually know IF it's good for the money is to listen & compare, not an easy task nowadays.
As far as "stereo" as surround(for now).
There are algorithms that will simulate it with it.
You can look at soundbars as an example on how well it works for people.
Jamo used to be a boutique brand but after they were bought out they became a bargain brand.
