My detector started beeping at 2am last night. I freaked out because we just turned on the fireplace for the first time this season. I couldn't tell if it was beeping 4 times (elevated carbon monoxide) or 5 times (end of life).

I didn't hesitate to call 911, the fire department tested the entire house, looks like everything was ok.

I would have 2 CO detectors for this situation and move the second one next to the first one. If the second one does not beep, it means the first one malfunctions.

For this unit you shouldn't have to guess I suppose since it has the CO readout on the display?

What if it's the second one that's malfunctioning

It rarely happens if both are from trusted brands and do not work at the same time. You can buy more if you still worry 🙂.
